All students are welcome as we provide quality coaching for players of all levels. All we ask is a commitment to the programme.
Our aim is to field three squads. We encourage players who have been involved in the County development programme to join and would encourage all players to play club netball outside of college. We also cater for players who have not had the opportunity to be involved in the County programme as we cater for all levels. We are proud that many players have progressed from third team status to 1st team over the two-year programme.
Truro and Penwith College Netball Academy provides fixtures where possible for three squads with local sides and in the British Colleges Leagues
Players have the opportunity of netball related activities including work on skills, tactics, and fitness, match play, and match analysis. All students have the opportunity to develop their own personal performance. There is a real club feeling to the academy with a real friendly atmosphere where everyone regardless of experience or ability is valued
Students are also encouraged to be involved in coaching and umpiring opportunities, gaining awards along the way. In recent years the students have run a Little League for students from local primary schools, during the summer term which all have found most rewarding. They also have work with local sport partnership, providing coaching sessions for local primary and secondary school children.
The Academy is strongly linked to Cornwall Netball’s Development programme. Many players who have been coached in the County’s Academies choose to attend Truro and Penwith College to continue their netball education. Cornwall’s Talent and Performance centre is based at the college and many of the players have progressed into the College Netball Academy. The Academy aims to nurture established players and identify new talent providing players with quality coaching and opportunities whilst pursuing a first class education.
The College has been recognised by Netball Southwest for the work it does to promote netball. It has been given NSW Talent and Performance Status, one of only three institutions in the Region to receive this accolade.
In the 2011-12 season we had players who attended British Colleges trials – one was selected and has had opportunity to play against national squads from Scotland and Ireland. We have also have England and Team Bath Talent Squad Players in the academy. Alongside the Academy programme selected students can follow a NVQ level 3 in in Sporting Excellence, and gain an Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence. The course is designed particularly for students who wish to pursue a career in sport. Once again Truro and Penwith College is a pioneer in introducing this course and one of only two establishments nationally running the Apprenticeship in Netball. This award is recognised by universities and aid applications to sport degrees.
The Academy welcomes all students and aims to help them to become the best that they can be
- County U19 Champions
- SW Regional Schools finals
- British Colleges National Tournament Silver medallists
- Winners of British Colleges Super League South
- Runners up in BCS Super League National Finals
Cornwall Netball has experienced great success at National level in both school and club championships over recent years. Truro College Netball Academy has been set up in conjunction with the County and South West Region Development programme to ensure this development is continued in the future. The academy plans to nurture established players and identify new talent. This initiative provides players with the real opportunity of a first class education coupled with top class Netball coaching and education.
All players coming to Truro and Penwith College who want to play Netball but do not want to join the academy group will be most welcome to do so.
