Want to be an Apprentice?

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true, but as an Apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds. So if you are keen to enter the world of work, but don’t want to stop studying then an Apprenticeship could be the answer. Truro and Penwith College can help you find an Apprenticeship in Cornwall.

What is an Apprenticeship?
As an Apprentice you will be working for a local business in Cornwall, earning a real wage, gaining practical skills and completing nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships typically take 1 year to complete and you will be paid at least £98.80 per week (based on 38 hours per week).

Why do an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining:

  • Nationally recognised qualifications
  • Workplace Experience
  • Practical Skills and Knowledge
  • A Real Wage (min of £98.80 per week – based on 38 hour week)

What’s involved?
Here at Truro and Penwtih College we offer a wide range of Apprenticeships in Cornwall (see the full list below) and the qualifications achieved through the Apprenticeships vary. Generally, as part of your Apprenticeship you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • An appropriate competence based qualification such as a Certificate or Diploma (previously NVQs) at either Level 2, Level 3 or Level 4
  • Key/Transferable/Functional Skills qualifications, e.g. working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology
  • A knowledge based qualification relevant to the specific Apprenticeship
  • Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation.
  • Employment rights and responsibilities (ERR)

These qualifications are achieved through a blended learning approach, incorporating taught sessions, workplace learning and assessments plus online learning and self-directed study. One-to-one support, tuition and advice are available from our team of experienced and qualified Tutors, Assessors and Advisers. You will need to attend a minimum of 10 taught sessions (days) over 20 weeks, a one day induction and 4 taught sessions for key skills (if applicable). In addition there will also be regular workplace visits. Taught sessions for Apprenticeships are held at venues throughout Cornwall.

Entry Requirements
Think Apprenticeships are only for young people? Think again! Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College are available to anyone over the age 16 living in Cornwall. There are no formal requirements as Apprenticeships are not just based on previous academic achievement. However, you will need to be committed, motivated, enthusiastic and reliable. Applicants will typically be interviewed prior to starting on an Apprenticeship programme.
