This Foundation Degree is for anyone who wishes to work with children, young people and their families. It is a dynamic course which develops skills needed to work within the children and young people’s workforce. The course is tailored to suit people who are working, or who wish to work, in a wide range of multi-disciplinary teams to enhance knowledge, understanding, skills and career opportunities.
The unique nature of this Foundation Degree means that it is suitable for those who are not sure which area of work with children and young people they wish to enter, whilst allowing those who have a specific career in mind to focus on that role. This is a flexible course which allows students to gain understanding of the complexities of working with children, young people and families alongside focusing on the transferable skills and knowledge required for working in the wider children’s workforce provision.

Entry Requirements
GCSE Level: Normally English and Maths at Grade C or above.
Together with one of the following:
A minimum of 60 tariff points at A Level or equivalent Level 3 qualification.
Access to Higher Education: Considered on an individual basis.
Applications from mature students without academic credentials will be considered on an individual basis.
National and Advanced Diplomas in a relevant subject are accepted as a progression to a Foundation Degree and HND.
Prospective students will be required to successfully complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau).

Course Structure
Stage One will develop essential understanding of the key concepts and principles in relation to the children’s workforce, allowing students to specialise in particular fields.
In Stage Two you will develop a deeper and more complex understanding, exploring the relationship between advanced concepts and the importance of the multi-agency working, including regulations, inclusivity and discrimination.

Academic Staff
Students are assigned a personal tutor and will have weekly tutorials.
Assessment
Assessment will use a mixture of methods appropriate to the modules, so will comprise of technical and analytical reports, presentations, practical work-based research and reflection, workshop exercises, case studies and essays. Students will need to present their work often to their peers.
The Future
This course will provide graduates with the appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills both to gain employment in this highly competitive field but also to be prepared for higher studies should they wish.
On completion of the Foundation Degree, students can progress to the BA (Hons) Education and Training degree at Truro and Penwith College. Alternatively, graduates can choose to study on articulated progression routes at Plymouth University: BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies, BA (Hons) Education Studies or BA (Hons) Health & Social Care. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability.
If you wish to enter the Children and Young People’s Workforce, then this course is suitable for you. It allows entry to teacher training and has strong links with a variety of other courses in the field of Health and Social Care and Social Science.
If you are thinking of working as a teacher, social care worker, voluntary worker or with children and/or young people with Special Educational Needs, this course provides the breadth of experience to ensure that you enter the workforce with the skills and knowledge you need.
