Course Overview

With men putting almost as much effort into their appearances as women, the demand for skilled barbers to cut and style hair is on the rise. (Barbers only cater for men – if you want to work on female hair too, see the Hairdressing Apprenticeship.) On this Apprenticeship, you will learn to carry out a shave or an Indian head massage. You will also learn about (and be tested on) other issues like hygiene, disposing of chemicals and working in a team.

Course Content

This Apprenticeship includes the following elements:

  • NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 3
  • Level 2 Functional Skill in Mathematics
  • Level 2 Functional Skill in English
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities (work-book)

Who is the Course For?

This Apprenticeship is ideal for those working in the male grooming industry and wishing to improve skills. Working in this industry you’ll be on your feet and working to please all sorts of customers, so a friendly nature and good sense of humour will come in handy.

Delivery Method

Apprenticeships are achieved through a blended learning approach, incorporating taught sessions, workplace learning and assessments and online learning. One-to-one support, tuition and advice are available from our team of experienced and qualified tutors, assessors and advisers.

Time Commitment

You will need to attend College for one day per week over a year. You will also need to attend a one day induction, and taught sessions for Functional skills (if applicable). Plus regular workplace visits plus online learning and self directed study.

Assessment

This Apprenticeship is achieved by attending taught sessions, completing a work-based portfolio and doing timed and work-based assessments. Assessment of barbering skills is based on practical competence. You must be able to demonstrate consistent performance of a commercially acceptable standard of work, combined with written competence in the subject studied.

Progression through Truro and Penwith College

  • Team Leading / Management Apprenticeship

Costs

The majority of the training costs delivered by the College for Apprenticeships are funded. There is a required employer contribution towards this as follows:

  • Apprentices aged 16 – 18 = Free
  • Apprentices aged 19+ = £250.00 Employer Contribution or £500 for large employers

Employers must pay Apprentices a wage (minimum of £2.65 per hour). Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College are only available to businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
