Course Overview

If you have ever watched a show like Grand Designs, you will know how much works goes into creating a single house. From the architect’s first scribbling to the final lick of paint on the cupboard doors, countless skills tasks are required. An Apprenticeship in the construction sector could teach you one of the many trades that make buildings work – from electrical engineering to maintaining heating systems and gas networks.

Construction Apprenticeships will give you the practical skills and real experience of working in the construction industry – helping you to gain a permanent career in this trade.

Trowel Occupations – Bricklaying Pathway: Bricklaying Level 2 Diploma / Trowel Occupations NVQ Level 2 / Functional Skills

Trowel Occupations – Craft Masonry Pathway: Craft Masonry Level 2 Diploma / Trowel Occupations NVQ Level 2 / Functional Skills

Wood Occupations – Bench Joinery Pathway: Bench Joinery Level 2 Diploma / Wood Occupations NVQ Level 2 / Functional Skills

Wood Occupations – Site Carpentry Pathway: Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma / Wood Occupations NVQ Level 2 / Functional Skills

Construction Specialist Pathway: Plastering Level 2 Diploma / Plastering NVQ Level 2 / Functional Skills

All of the above pathways include Level 1 Functional Skill in English and Level 1 Functional Skills in Mathematics.

Completing an Apprenticeship is a great way to gain practical work experience, develop your skills and knowledge, achieve nationally recognised qualifications and earn a real wage.

Delivery Method

Apprenticeships are achieved through a blended learning approach, incorporating hands-on taught sessions (usually 1 day per week over 2 years), workplace learning and online self-directed study.

Time Commitment

You will be working for a local business while attending weekly College sessions; supported by regular workplace visits, online learning and self-directed study.

Assessment

This Apprenticeship is achieved by attending taught sessions, completing a work-based portfolio and completing timed and work-based assessments.

Progression through Truro and Penwith College

  • After completing this Apprenticeship there are a number of potential progression options including Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships.

Costs  The majority of the training costs delivered by the College for Apprenticeships are funded. There is a required employer contribution towards this as follows:

  • Apprentices aged 16 – 18 = Free
  • Apprentices aged 19+ = £250.00 Employer Contribution or £500 for large employers

Employers must pay Apprentices a wage (minimum of £2.60 per hour). Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College are only available to businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
