Accountancy – Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship
Course Overview
Accounting is a cornerstone of business. This Apprenticeship is designed for those who want to become skilled working in accounting and finance or who are already working in this industry and want to become qualified as ‘Accounting Technicians’.
Course Content
This Apprenticeship includes the following elements:
- AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting
- Level 1 Functional Skill in Mathematics
- Level 2 Functional Skill in English
- Employer Rights and Responsibilities (Work-book)
At Level 2, topics include the preparing and recording of financial documentation, double entry bookkeeping, maintaining and reconciling the cash book, petty cash records, business transactions and extracting a trial balance, maintaining the journal and control accounts, providing basic cost and revenue information, computerised accounting and aspects of professional ethics in accounting and finance.

- Basic Accounting I
- Basic Accounting II
- Work effectively in Accounting & Finance
- Computerised accounting
You will also develop skills in analysing numerical information and communication relevant to your job role plus develop an understanding of employer rights and responsibilities and professional ethics. The Apprenticeship funding covers the costs of exam and certificate fees but not the cost of the membership fees for the AAT.

Delivery Method
Apprenticeships are achieved through a blended learning approach, incorporating taught sessions, workplace learning and assessment and online learning. One-to-one support, tuition and advice is available from our team of experienced and qualified tutors, assessors and advisers.
Time Commitment
The AAT Apprenticeship includes attending college once per week for 35 weeks – day and evening times are available. Skills test are also done outside of normal teaching time. Plus taught sessions for functional skills (if applicable) and regular workplace visits, online learning and self-directed study.
Assessment
This Apprenticeship is achieved by attending taught sessions, passing the professional exams, completing a work-based portfolio and completing timed and work-based assessments.

Costs
The majority of the training costs delivered by the College for Apprenticeships is funded. There is a required employer contribution towards this as follows:
- Apprentices aged 16 – 18 = Free
- Apprentices aged 19+ = £250.00 Employer Contribution or £500 for large employers
Employers must pay Apprentices a wage (minimum of £2.65 per hour). Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College are only available to businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
