My decision to study Higher Education at Truro and Penwith College opened so many doors for me, whilst allowing me to stay close to home with my family. It truly offers the best of both worlds.

From the course

Rachel, PGCE

Rachel undertook her A Levels at Truro College before moving on to study geography at university level. She returned to Cornwall to work for Cornwall Council in the planning department where she focused on renewable energy and climate change. She then went on to work on a voluntary basis for People and Gardens in St Austell, where she became inspired to explore the options for completing teacher training.

“I thought back to my fantastic and inspirational geography teacher at Truro College and knew straight away that post-16 was the age group I wanted to teach. I contacted the College who helped me establish my options and I decided to enrol on the full-time PGCE programme. In addition to the fact that I would be studying Sustainable Development in Education as a module, I really liked the fact that the programme was local, and that my placement would be with my ideal employer.”

Rachel now has a full-time, permanent contract teaching Geography and World Development at Penwith College.

Veronica, Certificate in Education

After relocating to Cornwall, Veronica was attracted to Truro and Penwith College by the reputation of its beauty department. Having qualified as a beauty therapist 12 years previously, she wanted to pass on her experience through teaching the subject she was passionate about.

“The placement element of the programme went very well. The beauty department was very supportive, and provided me with a mentor who was an excellent role model and was always there to answer any questions I had. The CertEd teaching staff were very accomplished in their field; the content of the course was extremely beneficial when put to practice in the classroom. I enjoy the job satisfaction that teaching gives you; being able to share your excitement and enthusiasm for your subject, with students that genuinely want to learn.”

Since graduating from the CertEd programme, Veronica has taught part-time in Truro College’s beauty department, delivering both the theory and practical aspects of the beauty courses.

Danny, Cornwall SCITT

Danny studied A Levels at Truro College before going on to complete a Mathematics degree. With both of his parents working as teachers, and previous teaching experience under his belt, he made the decision to return to college to study a PGCE.

Training with Cornwall SCITT and focusing on 14-19 Mathematics, he’s ultimately aiming to get a position teaching the subject at secondary school and sixth form level.

“The course has been really good. It’s really well structured and gets you teaching right away, which is great. You get to learn something and put it into practice the same week.”
