On this course you will gain the technical and social skills you need for a successful career in the beauty industry. This course will also enable you to progress further on to an apprenticeship, or to work in the industry as a nail technician.


Throughout this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding in a range of skills and techniques, alongside developing interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients and understand the expectations required when in the industry.

You will be taught by staff with extensive experience who will advance your knowledge and skills to meet the expectations of the hairdressing industry.

Develop Work Related Skills

During your programme, you will also develop personal and employability skills which will help prepare you for a level 2 qualification. You will be encouraged to engage with employers within the beauty industry.

Our working nail bar and beauty salons all contain the latest industry-standard equipment and resources.


This one-year qualification is mainly a practical course, using a variety of teaching methods including discussions, demonstrations, and presentations. You will work on your own, in pairs and in small groups practicing techniques within a realistic working environment in well-equipped, purpose-built salons. The nail qualification includes carrying out a client consultation service, manicure, pedicure, gel polish, nail art, nail enhancements and health and safety.


Following this course, you can either enter the industry as a Nail Technician or continue your studies with the college and do a Level 3 in Nail Services or another related beauty course.

Assessment Arrangements

Your achievement in this qualification depends on excellent attendance, punctuality and effort. You will study in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods:

  • Most assessments are completed through practical observations of skills and techniques. This will be carried out throughout all your units, as you continuously strive to work towards a competent level of client hairdressing services.
  • You will be assessed regularly on written theory work that may be conducted within the class or as a homework activity and feedback will be continuously provided on your progress.
  • Your performance will be reviewed during 1:1 sessions with your personal tutor.
  • Mock examinations will also be undertaken on each unit throughout your course preparing you for the next level of development and online exams

Entry Requirements

To gain a place on this course, you will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or above.

Information & Support

We encourage you to practice your skills away from College where possible and to utilise the online resources provided by the College for guidance. In addition, we expect you to conduct your own research, during set home study activities to enhance your understanding of products and the science behind nail services. However, we will also offer you opportunities to conduct this research at College.

Extra Information

Employability skills are a strong focus throughout this qualification allowing progression opportunities on to the next stage of learning within the hair and beauty sector.

You will need salon uniforms and specific equipment; full advice will be given on these before the start of your course.
