Apprenticeship Standard: Network Engineer L4

The primary role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation. Network engineers need to maintain the operation of communication networks in order to encourage their maximum performance for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They will understand network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and be able to give technical advice and guidance.

WHAT WILL I LEARN

You will learn both Technical Competencies and Technical Knowledge and Understanding, to understand this further, below is some specific areas you will study:

Technical Competencies

  • Can design, install, monitor and optimise simple networks from a well-defined specification and apply appropriate security products and processes.
  • Can apply structured approaches and diagnostic tools and techniques to identify the causes of network performance issues.
  • Can document work done in accordance with agreed procedures.
  • Can operate within the parameters of service level agreements, standards and agreed response times.
  • Can operate effectively in the business environment and responds to business issues related to network engineering

Technical Knowledge and Understanding

  • Understands and applies the principles of networking, protocols and associated technologies (specifically this should include the latest published versions of OSI layer model, IP, TCP/IP, routing and switching, WANs, LANs).
  • Understands and applies the architecture of a typical business IT system, maths required to be an engineer and the consequences of system failures.
  • Understands and responds to security threats, firewalls and vulnerabilities Underpinning Skills, Attitudes and Behaviours
  • Logical, creative and analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and to take responsibility using own initiative

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

Typical job roles which would be suitable for you after this course include Network Technician, Network Engineer, Systems Engineer, Network Administrator, Network Architect, Desk Based Engineer, Field-Based Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, Dynamic Network Engineer. Assessment Arragements

The decision as to when an apprentice is ready to cross the threshold from learning into the end point assessment (EPA) phase will be made by the employer and the training provider based on their monitoring of apprentices’ progress. In order to move into the EPA phase apprentices will need to have passed all the knowledge modules and/or vendor or professional qualifications and be able to produce a portfolio for the EPA. Level 2 English and Maths will need to be achieved, if not already, prior to the EPA.

You will be assessed on an individual basis on application/interview (Ideally, you will already have level 2 English and Maths)
