Truro and Penwith College has extremely realistic simulated working environments where students will learn and develop practical skills as well as the latest, industry-standard professional tools and equipment to make study as close to a real working environment as possible. The course is designed to prepare students to be ‘work ready’, creating a ‘real world’ Joinery experience delivered by passionate industry experts with many years’ experience in the trade. The lecturers know this industry and are well equipped to advise and deliver students onto the career pathway they desire; completion of a Bench Joinery Diploma can be the doorway to many other routes within the construction profession.
To bolster progression the College works with local employers who contribute to the knowledge and delivery of this training. Employers will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry and where possible work placements will also be provided.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This qualification covers all the key skills and knowledge needed to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as an Architectural Joiner. The units are designed so that students learn the underlying principles and practical skills involved, as well as getting an overview of the principles of construction, building technology and terminology used. Students will study the following modules:
- Health and Safety
- Principles of the Industry
- Set-Up and Operate Circular Saws
- Produce Setting-Out Detail for Bench Joinery Products
- Mark-Out from Setting-Out Bench Joinery Products
- Manufacture Bench Joinery Products
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that students have the necessary technical skills and knowledge they are looking for when recruiting a Joiner. This may be working for a housebuilding company, a property development company, or working as part of a small business repairing and refurbishing buildings.
This qualification will allow students to progress into employment enhancing the skills and knowledge gained at Level 2, to later progress into higher job roles such as an advanced craft Architectural Joiner or a Site Manager, or progress to a higher-level qualification such as the Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery, an Apprenticeship or a T Level.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You need to have achieved Grade 2 in English & Maths at GCSE, you must have a keen interest in construction and a good work ethic. You must be able to work alone and as part of a team and demonstrate commitment to the course.
INFORMATION & SUPPORT
We provide all of the tools and materials for the course, however you will be responsible for your own PPE and will be required to come equipped with a pair of steel toe capped boots and a pair of safety glasses.
