The Diploma is a Technical level vocational qualification, which has been developed collaboratively with employers, professional associations, and trade bodies to set the standard and content that will prepare you for a career as an employed or self-employed beautician/beauty specialist.
This part-time course includes all of the required elements to work within the beauty therapy industry at Level 2, the units of study are; skincare & facial, eye treatments, make up, manicure, pedicure and wax depilation. You will develop understanding of anatomy & physiology, client care, health and safety and learn technical skills to support achievement of practical assessments.
Kit and uniform for the course is approx £250. Students need to provide their own clients if at all possible and charges will be made for services. Pre-course interview will be required. The knowledge and skills learnt throughout the course will be tested through practical assessments and online tests. Home study is required. High standards of code of dress are an expectation.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Throughout this qualification, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and client care. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of beauty therapy products using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients. This qualification also allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment.
The units covered include waxing services; make up applications; eyelash and eyebrow tinting services; eyebrow shaping services; manicure and pedicure treatments; facial treatments; skin type analysis; consultation techniques and client care; health, safety, and hygiene; anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists.
The qualification’s structure provides you with the flexibility to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills as a beauty therapist.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
While this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a beautician/beauty specialist, you may choose to develop your skills by undertaking further qualifications in Beauty Therapy at Level 3.
Once qualified in Level 2 as a beauty specialist, there are many career opportunities you can enjoy, such as:
– Working in commercial beauty salons
– Working in a retail concession in a department store
– Working independently in your own salon/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
Your achievement in this qualification is dependent upon excellent attendance, punctuality and effort. You will study in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods:
Most of the assessment is completed through practical observations of skills and techniques and this will be carried out throughout all of your units, as you continuously strive to work towards a competent level within your treatments.
This one-year qualification is mainly a practical course using a variety of teaching methods including discussions, demonstrations and presentations. You will work on your own, in pairs and small groups practising techniques in well equipped, purpose-built salons, overlooking the beautiful Mounts Bay and St Michaels Mount.
You will be assessed regularly on written theory work that may be conducted within the class or as a homework activity and feedback will be continuously provided on your progress. You also will be assessed regularly on treatment terminology.
Your performance will be reviewed 3 times during a 1:1 session with your personal tutor. Mock examinations will also be undertaken on each unit throughout your course.
All units in this qualification are graded Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction* by:
- Externally set and Internally marked, graded practical assessment through observation
- Externally set and marked online examinations
- Externally set and internally marked graded synoptic assessment through observation
INFORMATION + SUPPORT
We encourage you to practice your treatments away from College where possible and to utilise the online resources provided by the College for guidance. In addition, we expect you to conduct your own research during set home study activities in relation to completion of assignments. However, we will also offer you opportunities to conduct this research at College.
You will need salon uniform and specific equipment; full advice will be given on these before the start of your course.
You will also be offered support and guidance throughout your placement by a work placement officer who will visit you at placement and be onsite to help you.
The basic requirement is at least three GCSE grade 3 and above and a grade 4 in Maths or English. If you do not gain grade 4 in Maths or English Language you will need to retake them at College alongside your main course.
