Students will be taught by current industry-based Barbers with extensive experience, who will help advance knowledge and skills to meet the expectations of the course and industry needs.

As well as working at a local salon setting as part of a work placement, students will train in college salons with the latest industry-standard equipment and resources as well as partnerships with high-end product companies such as Blue Beard Revenge.

All aspects of barbering, including cutting, styling and shaving services in line with current trends, as well as business skills such as communication, professionalism, personal presentation, time-keeping and customer service which will be a vital part of the student’s trade.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Throughout the qualification students will develop an understanding of all relevant industry skills, alongside developing interpersonal skills to assist them in their effective communication with clients and professionals. This qualification is practical skills focused with embedded knowledge targeted throughout. A variety of teaching methods including discussions, demonstrations and presentations are used to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for their chosen career path. Students will work independently, in pairs or small groups practicing techniques in a realistic working environment to improve skills knowledge and personal confidence ready for the introduction of clients and professional observations.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

Opportunities for the enterprising Barber can include: Working or owning a small barbers to large, high-end barbershops, catwalk and competitions, travel, cruise ships and education.

Progressing onto a Level 3 barbering qualification will offer more advanced knowledge and skills to help start a business and also the advanced techniques such as patterns and skin shaving services.

Following the achievement of  the Level 3 qualification, University level courses will qualify students for teaching, training or assessing positions.

Assessment Arrangements

Achievement in this qualification is dependent upon excellent attendance, punctuality and effort. Students will study in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods:

  • Most assessments are completed through practical observations of skills and techniques. This will be carried out throughout all units, as students continuously strive to work towards a competent level.
  • Student’s written theory work will be assessed regularly with assessments conducted at college, or as a homework activity. Feedback will be continuously provided on progress and preparation for mandatory multiple choice exams for required units.
  • Mock examinations will also be undertaken throughout the course preparing students for final End Point Assessment which will take place towards the end of the programme and be monitored by an independent assessor provided by the awarding body.

Entry Requirements

Grade 2 GCSE (E) or above in English and Maths.

Information & Support

Students are encouraged to observe others and practice skills development as much as possible at college and during their work placement, utilising these experiences and learning resources provided by the College and employers to personally target their learning needs. In addition, the College expects students to conduct their own research, during set home study activities to enhance the understanding of services, products and techniques. Students will also be offered opportunities to conduct this research at college with the use of Learning Resource Centers. Students will be required to attend all taught sessions in full uniform, with full kit ready for the lesson’s skills and services; full advice will be given on these before the start of your course.

Additional Information

Attendance of taught sessions is a mandatory requirement for this course and further hours will be needed as part of your in-salon work placement.

All units in this qualification are graded Fail, Pass or Distinction in preparation the End Point Assessment which includes:

  • Externally set and internally marked, graded practical assessment through observation
  • Externally set and marked online examinations

The Final End Point Assessment, graded by an independent assessor provided by the awarding body, includes a practical assessment of a full range of commercial skills within an industry setting which must be completed within the agreed commercially viable timings. Targeted oral questioning is used to establish student knowledge and understanding of the services offered and all contributing factors. Students will be assessed on their professional approach with clients and peers as well as their values, behaviours, communication, safe working practices, consultation skills and technical ability. The grade (Fail, Pass or Distinction) is awarded based on the marks given for each element.
