Rugby Academies

Open to players of any standard, the Female and Male Rugby Academies are ideal for any fan of the sport and welcomes everyone who wants to improve and excel.

Female Rugby Academy

What can I expect?

Rugby related activities ensure players can work coaching, fitness sessions and skills work into their training, with team building and officiating activities adding even more diversity into the mix. As Women’s Rugby is a developing sport, the College Academy programme is dependent on the numbers recruited each year, so if you love rugby, join in force with your friends.

When numbers allow, the College plays within the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport League and cups as well as festivals, friendly matches and tournaments at 15s, 10s and 7s. Players will also join other colleges across the South West to train and play a number of barbarian-style festivals and fixtures. Players are also given the opportunity to represent the College at a South West Colleges level and are encouraged to play in the county and regional set up within the Rugby Football Union Women’s player pathway.

As an England Rugby Partner College we are very successful in developing players in the under 16 age groups. The joint initiative between Truro and Penwith College and Exeter Chiefs’ Rugby Academy provides players with the real opportunity of a first-class education coupled with first-class rugby coaching, while staying in Cornwall.

Male Rugby Academy

What can I expect?

Our four teams play in over 70 fixtures and tournaments per season. All students will have the opportunity to compete for places in any of the teams, which play weekly, although players in the First team squad will normally be of county standard or higher.

You will engage in rugby related activities, which will include theory sessions, coaching, video analysis, fitness sessions, skills work and weight training. The Academy has toured to South Africa, Dubai and Canada, as well as competing at The Sanix Junior Rugby Tournament in Japan for a number of years.

leagues

The College competes in the Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) league along with the other premiership academies (Wasps, Leicester, Sale, London Irish and Gloucester), the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Leagues and Cups, as well as friendly matches against local schools and colleges. In recent seasons the College has won the Daily Mail Cup, British Colleges U19 Knock-Out Cup, National 10s and 7s, South West Colleges League and Samurai 7s. The most recent success includes winning the AASE League Plate at Allianz Park in 2014 and becoming finalists at the AoC Premier Cup in 2016.

Success

The Cornwall RFU has been very successful in developing players in the under 16 age groups. These players at post-16 have been faced with difficult choices. Often they have left the county to relocate and continue with both their rugby and their education. This joint initiative between Truro and Penwith College and Exeter Chiefs’ Rugby Academy provides players with the real opportunity of a first-class education coupled with first-class rugby coaching, whilst staying in Cornwall. As well as these links with Exeter Chiefs, many players will also play for Cornish Pirates, Plymouth, Redruth and the Cornish All Blacks in the National Leagues.
