Don’t do enough art in school? Join the club…

For eight years talented Cornish young people aged 13-16 have been making art, following their creative impulses and expressing their talent as part of the Art & Design Saturday Club at Truro College.

As part of the National Art & Design Saturday Club which has now been running for ten years, the Truro College Saturday Club is free to attend and enables young people aged 13-16 to work with practising artists, qualified lecturers and visiting specialists, then get arty and try new creative techniques, and exhibit their work in Cornwall and in London and visits galleries on the annual London trip.

Areas of creativity include drawing, printmaking, ceramics, life drawing, jewellery, textiles, sculpture, photography and animation. Previous Masterclass tutors have included Anthony Frost, Bob Deveraux, Peter Randall-Page, Jim Le Fevre and ‘Fixperts’.

The Saturday Art Club is a way for students who want to study art at Truro and Penwith College to gain enough art experience to be able to do art subjects at A Level or BTEC Diploma level – something that isn’t always possible as schools reduce or remove art programming from curriculums as other demands on time and money sometimes push art out of the school timetable or prevent it from being a GCSE choice.

The club also encourages young people into the creative sector—a vital part of the UK and Cornish economies and part of Cornish cultural heritage – a sector that contributes an ever-increasing proportion of the UK’s economy, but is often overlooked in the push to promote other areas. The creative sector is built on a constant stream of new talent and fresh ideas, imaginative thinking combined with specialist skills. Young people attending the Art Club learn about the diverse educational and job opportunities that can lead to these exciting careers.

A highlight for me is their joy and surprise at having made something worthwhile. It’s this kind of magic that draws them into the world of art and design.
