Ofsted Outstanding Truro and Penwith College launched its Furlough Training Scheme just last week, with funding allowing it to waive the training costs of courses designed to upskill staff who have been furloughed in the hospitality, hair, beauty and complementary therapy sectors.
Seven of the courses that were made available through the scheme are already fully booked with furloughed workers keen to take advantage of the free training and use their time to upskill and enhance their career prospects.
Three courses still have places available with the College taking bookings on a first-come first-served basis: VTCT Level 2 Award in Footcare, Infection Prevention and VTCT Level 2 Award in LED Gel Polish.
Extra classes for Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace course has been added due to their popularity and remain available.
The expansion of the initiative will see a further ten courses added this week, all of which are also available to study for free thanks to part-funding from the European Social Fund, which will be matched by Truro and Penwith College for the duration of the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to provide this timely support to furloughed workers:

Charli Styles, European Projects Manager at Truro and Penwith College commented: “The Furlough Training Scheme is a huge socio-economic boost for Cornwall during what is an incredibly difficult time. The response we saw to the first round of courses released just last week has been nothing short of phenomenal, with only a handful of places left on those that remain available.
“It’s very pleasing to go even further to support people from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with the extension of the scheme and addition of business and professional courses, which will benefit furloughed workers in almost any sector.
“I hope we see many more people coming forward and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from our industry expert tutors, enhance their career prospects and support their mental health”.
The funded training is available to anyone who is currently registered as furloughed, or whose usual employment has been impacted by the pandemic, regardless of the sector they usually work in.
