Local college’s training restaurants maintain AA College Rosettes

After a recent round of inspections, Truro and Penwith College’s training restaurants Senara and Spires have continued to impress as they are once again awarded a Highly Commended AA College Rosette, Gold Accreditation and Centre of Excellence status for multiple categories.

These prestigious awards, which came after a detailed visit by People 1st, show the College’s hospitality provision to be state-of-the-art as each award is the highest possible achievement in the category.

This isn’t the first time the two training restaurants have been highly commended by the international quality assurance expert. In 2016, Penwith College’s Senara restaurant received its first AA Rosette, which it has continued to hold ever since, while Truro College’s restaurant Spires has held its AA Rosette since 2017.

It’s also the second time the College’s restaurants have earned a Gold Award and Centre of Excellence for their outstanding provision. This year’s Centre of Excellence is for Food and Beverage Service, Fish and Shellfish and Patisserie and Confectionary, making Spires and Senara the ideal place to stop by for a sensational seafood meal or coffee and a cake.

Award criteria requires that the restaurant serves food prepared with care, uses good quality ingredients, that the learning environment and restaurant are of the best quality and that it can compete well within a true restaurant environment including highly polished service levels and clear support from lecturers. The Gold Accreditation on the other hand is given to ‘colleges that achieve the best in their class and demonstrate a progressive and sustainable commitment to matching learners’ skills with employers’ needs.

Graham Oxley, Programme Team Leader for Vocation and Commercial Skills at Penwith College, was thrilled with the resulted of the inspection, saying: “The College is delighted that the dedication, hard work, professionalism and enthusiasm of our staff, students and the businesses we work closely with, has been again recognised with these awards from People 1st. Hospitality is such an important industry for Cornwall and the UK and it’s reassuring to know that students are getting the best training possible for the many fantastic career opportunities available in this sector.”
