Truro and Penwith College has launched its new package of training and funding options for 2022 that will support employers to navigate the continuing Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit transition.

The new range of training programmes includes many that are available remotely and has been developed with Cornwall-based employers to help support the needs of local business and industry. It will be key in supporting businesses to adapt to the changing landscape of the Covid-19 pandemic and to navigate the Brexit transition, with funding options available to ensure employers can access the training they need in the current economic climate.

Truro and Penwith College boasts a highly experienced Business Relations team, that works in partnership with employers to help them select the right training and funding options for their business and develop bespoke training in collaboration with College lecturers.

50% funding is available for professional development courses

Thanks to investment from the European Social Fund, Truro and Penwith College can offer businesses and individuals 50% funding for the majority of its professional development courses, including the industry-recognised ILM qualifications in Leadership, Management and Coaching. The College also has access to funding and grants that will allow it to develop new courses and provide free pilots to help hone course content.

The College’s development of online learning platforms during the pandemic provided tens of thousands of successful online sessions. Feedback from employers has highlighted the convenience and increased productivity of learning remotely, leading to the College making a selection of its professional training programmes and business seminars available online in 2022, all of which are highlighted in the new brochure.

In October’s Autumn Budget and Spending Review the Chancellor announced additional investment in Skills Bootcamps and Apprenticeships to boost the Government’s Plan for Jobs; news the College welcomed for the benefit of future skills, the business community and employment prospects of Cornwall residents.

The College’s Apprenticeship provision continues to grow in collaboration with the business community to deliver workplace skills and experience employers need. Thanks to a £695 million government scheme the College’s Business Relations team has been ensuring that SME employers only pay 5% of their Apprenticeship training costs, while also supporting large employers to unlock the funding available in their Apprenticeship Levy.

The most recent Department for Education (DfE) figures recognise Truro and Penwith College as Cornwall’s top College provider for employer satisfaction and as one of the UK’s top 10 College providers for Apprenticeship achievement.

The College is delivering Skills Bootcamps that support the Government's Plan for Jobs.

The College’s delivery of the DfE’s Skills Bootcamp programmes in Computer Programming, Digital Marketing and Welding have enjoyed a successful start with learners progressing in their roles or filling skills gaps for Cornish employers and this is set to continue with new Skills Bootcamps starting in the new year. Traineeships are courses that include work placements and can last from six-weeks to twelve-months giving employers the opportunity to offer work experience to a student, with a view to offering an Apprenticeship or T Level placement later. Employers are taking advantage of traineeship programmes along with the government’s £1,000 incentive for employers.

The new funding and training are in addition to the College’s continued investment in infrastructure and facilities to support the shared vision of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP, Cornwall Council and Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. The College recently opened the £7 million Valency building at Truro College with facilities matching the best in the UK for digital, engineering and manufacturing, invested £48.5 million in new facilities to support new T Levels in construction and health and £200,00 in a new Nursing Simulation Suite.

The College’s £6.3 million STEM & Health Skills Centre, the Ottery Building, is also under construction in Bodmin and is expected to be completed in spring 2022 with state-of-the-art facilities in engineering, manufacturing and digital skills to support businesses and local people in East Cornwall.
