New College group jumps into first competition

Ever expanding its sporting provision, Truro College has set up a Truro College Equestrian Team so students can pursue their equestrian goals with likeminded people.

Three students from the College, who are currently studying a range of courses, joined up to take part in local events in the Cornish Schools and Colleges Team Show Jumping competitions, despite there being few Colleges in the league.

The current team consists of Emily, Mia and Tegan from Truro College and Kelsey from Pool School.

Adorned with a Truro College hoodie that Tegan’s mum kindly embroidered, the girls took part in their first competition on Sunday, despite the adverse weather. Taking part in the Open Show Jumping Competition, the students jumped 90/95cm heights and while none of the students achieved podium places the event was a huge success and was enjoyed by all involved.

Team founder and manager Vanessa Till who works as a Business lecturer at the College, was delighted with the students’ performances, saying: “They were really enthusiastic on such an awful weekend weather wise and they worked really hard to get their ponies really nicely turned out. Unfortunately, this time we weren’t lucky enough to get placed but the girls worked really hard and it was lovely to see how they all got on with each other and how kind they were to each other and how supportive.

“It’s really exciting to be able to start a show jumping team for the College and to gather people together with these interests. It’s lovely to have the support from the College to drive this forward.”

Show jumping student Mia loved the event on Sunday despite the rain, saying: “We had really bad weather for it but we’re one of the first colleges in Cornwall to enter a team even though it’s open to colleges and not just schools. We had really tough competition this weekend with lots of people who jump at a really high level, but we had a really good team spirit and enjoyed and are really looking forward to the next.”
