It’s no secret that the Christmas period is vital for the retail industry, with a good or bad festive period making or breaking a company’s financial year. In the five week build up to the big day in 2017 UK consumers spent a whopping £43.4bn, perhaps surprisingly only £1bn of this was spent on food with £8.2bn spent online. The remaining £35.2bn was spent on the high-street, up 3.4% on 2016*.
With more money being spent it’s interesting to note that 2017 saw in-store footfall drop by 5.5% compared to 2016*. An increase in spend is clearly good news for retailers but with fewer individuals visiting our stores the value of a positive customer experience and the importance of those working on the front line to deliver that experience while understanding merchandising and upselling has been brought into focus.
