Taster sessions increase participation in Cornish netball

Twenty three girls have taken up netball as a result of Saints Netball taster sessions that were held at Truro College for year five and six students from Truro and Penwith College Academy Trust (TPAT) primary schools last week.

The primary school students enjoyed fun invasion games, ball skills and basic footwork drills. Four newly qualified Level 1 coaches from Saints Netball’s Talented Coach Programme ran the sessions, two of whom are students and Netball Academy members at Truro and Penwith College, with the other two coaches coming from Penair School and Penryn College.

The coaches have been working alongside Jean Davies, Head Coach at Saints Netball to coach young players at the club throughout this academic year, and all are part of the Team Bath Performance Hub for talented players, which is also based at, and run in partnership with, Truro College.

The sessions were also open to primary school students outside of the Truro and Penwith Academy Trust as part of the Club and the College’s partnership to promote netball and female participation in sport and physical activity.

Vicky Pearson, Programme Team Leader for Sport at Truro and Penwith College, commented: “These were highly successful taster sessions attracting 23 new players to the sport. It’s fantastic to see coaches that have come through the Talented Coach Programme putting their new qualifications to use and positioning themselves as role models to inspire the next generation of netball players.”

Jean Davies, Head Coach at Saints Netball, said: “Saints are committed to supporting players of all ages and abilities. We are currently U12 and U14 County Champions and have a reputation for producing talented players, but are also equally committed to helping those who just want to enjoy playing socially to access the sport. We are thrilled to be involved in these sessions and hope to continue our partnership with Truro and Penwith College and TPAT schools to increase participation in the sport.”
