Unique opportunity for Design and Craft enthusiasts

Aspiring artists and creatives have been given a highly unique opportunity to enter the professional world of making, thanks to two new specialist University level course that have come to Cornwall.

FdA Design Craft Maker and its progression course BA (Hons) Craft and Design, have been designed to combine all aspects of design craft making with a variety of mediums including textiles, ceramics and metalwork.

The degree courses, being taught at the TEF Gold-rated Truro and Penwith College from September, will be available to both students applying straight from College and working professionals who have aspirations to follow a more creative career route.

Sean Dugan, Programme Leader of the FdA Design Craft Maker course said; “There is a current renaissance in the art of making”. He continues “This course allows Designer Makers to explore and challenge materials and processes, expanding their creativity to include new emerging technologies alongside the traditional”.

With the option to complete the full bachelor’s degree with a one-year top-up course, BA (Hons) Craft and Design, also offered at the college, students will be fully prepared for a career in the industry with a well-rounded knowledge of all areas including entrepreneurial knowledge before graduating.

The College’s University level provision was assessed as Gold Standard and has been craft courses for over 15 years. Lesley stone, a second year FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery student said “The College has really pushed the boundaries of my abilities and creativity in ways I could not have conceived before taking this course”.

Truro College boasts a vast range of facilities within their purpose-built art building. Level three art student Chris Mutton said “Truro was a really great place for me to get an excellent grounding in Art. The department is always such a fun place to be, full of energy”.

Surrounded by the fast-paced industry of art, craft and design, students will not only have the opportunity to develop practical and academic skills, but also have the opportunity to create their own business using entrepreneurial knowledge that is also delivered on the course. 

Other University level creative courses are also on offer at the College, with FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery at Truro campus and HNC and HND Art and Design at Penwith campus. Additionally, for those interested in digital illustration and animation, HNC and FdA Computer Games Design and Production is also now available at the Truro campus.
