Employer: Truro and Penwith College
Job Title: Library Team Leader
Course Studied: ILM Level 5 Leadership & Management
My Story:
Jo is the Library Team Leader at Truro and Penwith College managing 14 members of staff across the College’s four campuses; Bodmin, Penwith, Tregye and Truro.
In need of some support with managing people, she reached out to the College about Leadership & Management courses after hearing previous success stories.
Having a class of individuals from different sectors gave alternative insight into leading a variety of teams. Jo said: “The class was amazing; it was small which meant we all got a chance for input.
“Despite coming from very different backgrounds, we all gelled well and got to know a lot about each other. The whole thing has been a great help in my current role; both what I learnt from the course and the tips I picked up from other learners.”
Jo learnt a number of useful things throughout the course including the Eisenhower Matrix which will support her with time management and the theory behind people management which has given her confidence in her approach to team members.
She said: “The discussions around efficiency, and translation of our vision into successful and measurable outcomes has given me a more management-focussed view of my role, encouraging me to create my own targets and try to streamline some of our processes.”
Jo’s employer supported her by allowing the time off to attend the sessions but the additional assignment tasks could’ve been a challenge. However, due to the course’s flexibility Jo didn’t have to worry. She explained: “It was difficult to fit in the assignment work. I had thought I could do it at work but my role is very busy and I didn’t get the chance. However, the hand-in dates were very flexible and we didn’t have to worry if we didn’t get everything done exactly on time which was extremely helpful.”
If you are in a management role or aspiring to be, Jo says: “This course is perfect. I really enjoyed it. The lecturer was lovely and very supportive, but so were the other students. I believe 100% in lifelong learning and would encourage anyone debating studying a new course to just do it.”
The College have a number of Leadership and Management (ILM) courses that run throughout the year. Find out more or enrol here.
