Jowan has just finished his BTEC Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science course and has secured his place at University of Gloucestershire with the support of Penwith College helping him to go further.
As part of the Sport and Exercise Science course, Jowan had the opportunity to study a broad range of sport and health related topics such as promoting health lifestyles, helping athletes with performance, and exploring the psychology to injury recovery.
During his time at College, Jowan also took advantage of the Truro and Penwith College’s unrivalled Enrichment programme that offers students exciting academies to continue their hobbies and explore their passions. In his first year, Jowan participated in the High Performance Academy and enjoyed building his strength and stamina in the College’s onsite gym.
Jowan said: “The High Performance Academy is great, you get a lot of good opportunities to get into the gym when you’ve got free time.” It’s really benefited Jowan that the college gym is free for all students, allowing him to train with his friends and enabling him to keep progressing in his sports.
In his second year at College, Jowan joined the Rugby Academy and enjoyed playing against other teams.
Choosing Penwith College was an easy choice for Jowan, “Penwith College had all the options I wanted to pick and I liked what I had seen of the staff.” He really liked the feel of the campus and how everyone knew each other really well.
Throughout his time at College, Jowan has received amazing support from his lecturers, stating: “The lecturers always motivated us to do well and helping you get the most out of college and the course.” Jowan also found the UCAS application support to be really useful when preparing his application for university.
For students wanting a career in sport or coaching, Jowan would recommend this course as it offers a wide variety of topics. Jowan also said: “Try as hard as you can from the start as it makes it easier in the end. Give all your effort for 7 seconds and the rest will follow.”
After College, Jowan is going to University of Gloucestershire to study BSc (Hons) Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation. This degree is professionally accredited by the world-leading National Strength and Conditioning Association and enables enable students to become top strength and conditioning coaches.
Jowan said: “I would like to either work with a professional sports team or academy being a strength and conditioning coach” He is interested in specialising in Rugby, however at University Jowan intends to gain as much experience as he can with a range of sports.
