What to expect
Players have the opportunity to train on the basketball court for up to seven hours a week, to play in competitive fixtures, train in the fitness suite, receive match and personal performance analyses, and be given nutritional and psychological guidance.
There are several male teams to accommodate the number and standard of players, and a female team if there is demand. Students compete in the Association of Colleges (AOC) Sport competitions, including the Southwest League, Southwest Cup, and National Championship qualifying tournament. We also compete in the Dynamic National Schools Competition and U19 County League.
Learn to coach
Players are also offered a chance to learn how to coach, referee and table officiate, and are encouraged to complete the associated England Basketball qualifications run at the College. This enables Academy players to volunteer in local primary and secondary schools, and officiate and coach at the primary school basketball festivals and the County Schools finals held at Truro College and other establishments.
The College hosts, officiates and plays in the local (county) men’s league, which is the junior section of Cornwall Cougars (national league). Truro College has developed a community club providing coaching and games opportunities for both primary and secondary school children. Cornwall Cougars Wheelchair Basketball club is based at Truro College, which offers opportunities for players to get involved in all aspects of the games.
Playing for the Basketball Academy these past two years has been a great experience. I was able to play at a high standard with great coaches and facilities, this has helped me to develop and improve both my ability and confidence levels in the sport.
