MTS Electrical Services was set up by Marc in March 2017 when he decided he wanted to be in control of his work.
The company provides electrical services to domestic and commercial customers. His services range from fitting a new light to a complete rewire.
As the business developed, Marc realised he needed some support so employed an office assistant to undertake administrative duties, including answering enquires and completing the paperwork.
The company have an automated system to ensure customers are kept up to date every step of the way. At the press of a button on his smartphone, Marc can send a text to say he is on his way. An answering service ensures every single call is picked up if they are away from the phone.
Marc said: “I was working for a large company and got promoted but then I realised I wanted to be hands on and build my own company.”
It wasn’t all plain sailing as after an initial busy period, work tailed off. Marc was then introduced to the Spark Programme run by Truro and Penwith College.
Spark helped Marc to gain confidence and focus his marketing on targeting specific people, rather than just waiting for the phone to ring.
I like deciding my own future and directing the company. I now get to choose the work I want to do.
Marc has big plans for the future, but likes to specialise in the smaller, domestic jobs. He recently installed some security lights. The customer was delighted with the service and sent them a handmade gift to express her thanks.
When choosing an electrician, Marc recommends that you check they are registered with an industry body.
Marc is registered with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC), the UK’s leading voluntary regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry. It has been assessing the electrical competence of electricians for over 60 years, maintaining a roll of over 26,000 registered contractors. The NICEIC regularly assesses Marc’s work to ensure his policies and processes are in place.
Setting up your own business can be daunting. “It was scary to start with but I am now at the stage where I am ready to take on an apprentice,” Marc says.
The longer term plan is to build up a team of qualified electricians to work for MTS Electrical, with Marc handling the sales and quotations.
Spark has given Marc the confidence and belief that he can make it happen.
Before I came to Spark, I just felt like an electrician, now I feel like a company owner!
