Employing an Apprentice FAQ

We have included some information below to guide you through the basics of employing an Apprentice.

If you’re interested in finding out more get in touch with the team and we will advise you every step of the way to ensure your Apprenticeship programme fits with the requirements of your business while delivering the best possible experience for our Apprentices.

Do I need to offer a contract of employment?

An Apprentice is a full-time employee within your business and is entitled to the same staff benefits of all other employees.

The length of the contract of employment will need to match the lengthe of the Apprenticeship programme. The length of each programme can be found on our Apprenticeship Training Programmes page.

How much should I pay?

Providing you conform to the national minimum wage, you are free to set the rate of pay for your Apprentices.

It is very important to pay an appropriate wage for the job you expect the Apprentice to perform and a rate that is competitive amongst employers recruiting Apprentices in your sector. See who is recruiting on our Apprenticeship Jobs page.

When will my Apprentices attend College?

Apprentices need to work a total of 30 hours a week to complete their Apprenticeship (this includes the time they spend at College). When your Apprentice attends College can vary by programme but they will typically spend 20% of their time in the classroom. For some programmes this is one day every two weeks and for others there can be a block of training to help them acquire the basic skills before entering the workplace.

Which College will my Apprentices attend?

Many of our Apprenticeship programmes are available at both Truro and Penwith College, in which case the Apprentice will train at the most convenient location.
