WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This apprenticeship has been developed in collaboration with industry partners, including Cormac, to equip individuals with the skills to support engineers and construction professionals in planning, designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure projects. Apprentices will gain expertise in using engineering principles, digital tools like Computer Aided Design (CAD), and industry standards to create technical solutions for buildings, transportation systems, water management, and more. The programme has been shaped by industry expertise, ensuring apprentices develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to succeed in real-world civil engineering environments.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Knowledge

This apprenticeship provides apprentices with comprehensive knowledge in civil engineering principles, including the preparation and production of plans, designs, and documentation to industry standards and codes of practice. They will learn to use digital tools such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) for visualisation and technical problem-solving. The programme covers essential topics like structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, and sustainable construction. Apprentices will also understand health, safety, and welfare requirements, ensuring compliance with regulations and safe systems of work. This knowledge equips them to support the planning, design, building, and maintenance of infrastructure projects.

Skills

This apprenticeship enables apprentices to develop a broad range of skills essential for supporting civil engineering projects. These include preparing and producing engineering diagrams, drawings, and models using digital tools like Computer Aided Design (CAD). They will learn to collect and interpret technical data, perform calculations, and analyse results to develop engineering solutions. The programme also covers project management skills, such as planning, scheduling, and budgeting, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client specifications. Additionally, apprentices will gain experience in site engineering, including operating quality systems, adhering to health and safety regulations, and managing risks effectively.

Behaviours

Apprentices will demonstrate a strong commitment to health, safety, and welfare, ensuring compliance with regulations. They will exhibit professionalism, reliability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Effective communication, teamwork, and a dedication to continuous improvement are also key behaviours expected throughout the programme.

Typical Duties that an Apprentice will carry out in the workplace:

Prepare and produce engineering drawings, diagrams and models using digital tools such as CAD. Collect, analyse and interpret technical data to support engineering design and decision-making. Assist with project planning, including scheduling, budgeting and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Support site activities, ensuring health, safety and quality standards are maintained.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

This Apprenticeship Standard will open up a range of exciting career opportunities. Apprentices can progress to roles such as Civil Engineering Technician, CAD Technician, or Site Engineer. Upon completion,
apprentices can also progress to the Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprenticeship with Truro & Penwith College.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is a crucial component of apprenticeship standards, designed to evaluate an apprentice’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) acquired during their training. The EPA typically includes a combination of practical assessments, professional discussions, and portfolio reviews, ensuring apprentices are fully prepared for their chosen career. This assessment is carried out independently by an End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), ensuring impartiality and fairness. Employers play a key role in confirming readiness for the EPA, supporting apprentices throughout the process to achieve successful outcomes.
