Do you you enjoy understanding how things work? Do you like working with your hands and have an enthusiasm for practically solving problems? If yes, then engineering is a path that will suit you. Engineering is a very broad subject, with many routes into employment. Many students progress directly into Apprenticeships, with the growing number of technology focused employers in Cornwall and beyond. Career pathways could include Mechatronics, Welding & Fabrication, Maintenance, Machining or other technical routes. This course is designed as a steppingstone into the exciting and diverse world of engineering and the wide range of opportunities it offers.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will be studying in our well-equipped and cutting-edge technology building being trained on modern, manual machines and equipment.
Units that you will study include:
- Working in an Engineering Environment – This unit will encourage you to find out about working in engineering. It will cover the underpinning basic skills and knowledge needed to function in engineering or manufacturing sectors. It also covers the need to recognise and use safe working practices, consideration for environmental impact and working effectively as part of a team. It includes the methods of communication that engineers use in their everyday work.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
The vast majority of learners on this route progress into employment and Apprenticeships. This ranges from companies involved in the Marine, Manufacturing, Maintenance or Welding and Fabrication sectors. Some students choose to diversify into motor vehicle maintenance or design. Experienced engineers have high levels of job satisfaction as well as good levels of pay.
To access this course, you must achieve Grade 3 in English, Maths and Science at GCSE level.
If you are over 16 and want a career in engineering but don’t know enough about it or want to develop your skills first, our Level 2 Progression to Engineering could be for you.
This course could also allow you to transfer to an Apprenticeship in manufacturing programming if you find employment.
You will be offered the opportunity to gain a work placement (and supported to do so) that could be in a day release format or a block release pattern. All students are encouraged to engage with local employers to enhance their understanding of the industrial processes used in modern manufacturing.
