WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
This course is intended for students who want to progress to a career in the digital sector, with a focus on support services, whether that be digital infrastructure, network cabling or digital support. This course will ensure students have the knowledge and skills needed to progress into highly skilled employment, an Apprenticeship or higher-level study, including university. Lessons take place in specialist IT rooms with networked PCs. Your lecturers will be specialists in their field who will teach you through a variety of demonstrations, lectures and by helping you undertake a variety of practical tasks. You will have access to hardware and networking lab facilities for the practical parts of the course.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The T Level Technical Qualification in Digital: Support Services has two mandatory components:
Core Component – This component covers the underpinning knowledge, concepts and skills that support threshold competence in the digital industry.
The core content focuses on students’ knowledge and understanding of contexts, concepts, theories, principles and core skills within the digital industry. The topics covered include: business context; business culture; fundamentals of data; digital analysis; digital environments; diversity and inclusion; digital learning and emerging technologies; legislations; project planning; security; testing; and the application of digital tools.
Occupational Specialist Component – This component covers the occupational specialist knowledge and skills required to demonstrate threshold competence for the specialism and it will be assessed by a skills-related project that synoptically assesses the Performance Outcome skills and associated underpinning knowledge. The topics covered include: Procedures and controls to maintain digital security; installing, configuring, testing, and supporting infrastructure; and discovering, evaluating and applying reliable sources of knowledge.
Industry Placement – Every student will undertake an industry placement with an employer focused on developing the practical and technical skills. Placements will be undertaken with a minimum of 315 hours.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
Upon completion of this course, you will have the knowledge and skills needed to progress into highly skilled employment, an Apprenticeship or higher-level study, including university. Some individuals may wish to seek employment in the workplace as an IT professional/ IT apprentice. These job roles could include network engineer, cyber security professional, systems engineer, and computer systems analyst.
At the end of the Technical Qualification, students are expected to demonstrate threshold competence, which means that they have gained the core knowledge and skills related to support services and are well placed to develop full occupational competence with additional development and support once in employment in the digital sector.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and consists of written tasks, presentations, demonstrations, and controlled assessments. You will also be required to sit external exams as part of the course requirements.
Year One – There are three assessments in the Core Components. Two written exams, one externally assessed project.
Year Two – The Occupational Specialist Component is a single synoptic assignment. This assessment consists of a number of activities grouped into four substantive tasks.
You must attend an interview where your experience and/or performance and attitude will be considered. You will need to demonstrate your commitment to your two-year programme of study and have a passion to work in the digital sector.
Students are most likely to s쳮d if they have 5 GCSEs at grade 4. including Maths and English.
Working within the Student Services area, the Student Support team will see you on a one-to-one basis and offer advice and guidance on financial, personal, and emotional issues. A professional team of staff work together with your personal tutor to support you so that you can successfully complete your course and recognise pathways to progression after leaving College.
