WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
The Level 3 V Level in Digital Systems and Data is designed for students who want to develop a strong understanding of digital technology, and the role data plays in modern organisations.
If you enjoy technology, investigating how things work, solving problems and understanding information, this course will help you explore the digital sector and the opportunities it offers.
You will discover how digital systems support businesses and individuals, how data is collected and used, and how digital solutions can meet different needs. You will develop the knowledge and skills to apply your learning to practical scenarios, evaluate information and make informed decisions.
The qualification offers a vocational approach to learning, helping you connect your understanding of digital systems and data with real-world contexts. It can provide a route towards higher education, higher technical training, apprenticeships or employment in a range of digital and technology-related fields.
This qualification is equivalent to one A Level, so you would need to choose either another two A Levels or a BTEC Diploma (which is equivalent to two A Levels). We would recommend studying this programme alongside the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in IT.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will study the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to understand digital systems and data, and how they are used in different contexts.
Your learning will explore areas such as:
- Digital systems: Understand the purpose of digital systems, their components and how they work together to meet user and organisational needs.
- Data and information: Explore how data is represented, collected, organised, processed and used to create meaningful information.
- Digital technologies: Develop an understanding of the technologies and tools that support digital activities and information management.
- Problem-solving: Apply logical and analytical thinking to investigate problems and identify appropriate solutions.
- Using and interpreting data: Explore how information can be analysed and evaluated to support decisions and recommendations.
- Digital solutions: Consider how digital systems and data can be used to meet requirements and improve processes.
- Security, legislation and responsible practice: Understand the importance of protecting information, using data appropriately and recognising relevant legal, ethical and security considerations.
- Communication and evaluation: Learn to explain your findings, assess evidence and communicate recommendations clearly to different audiences.
You will apply your learning through tasks and activities that require you to demonstrate knowledge, use information appropriately, analyse evidence and make reasoned judgements.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
Successful completion of the Level 3 V Level in Digital Systems and Data can support progression into further study, higher technical training, apprenticeships or employment, depending on your interests and the entry requirements of your chosen pathway.
Possible progression routes include:
- Higher education courses in computing, information technology, data or related subjects.
- Higher technical qualifications and relevant apprenticeships.
- Further training in digital systems, data, software or business technology.
- Entry-level opportunities in digital and technology-related workplaces, where the qualification meets the employer’s requirements.
The knowledge and transferable skills you develop can provide a foundation for exploring careers in IT support, digital operations, data-related roles and other areas of technology. Some specialist roles will require additional qualifications, practical experience or further training.
Assessment will combine examinations and non-exam assessments, allowing you to demonstrate both your understanding of the subject and your ability to apply what you have learned.
The regulatory requirements for the Level 3 V Level specify that 40% of the total assessment marks are allocated to examinations and 60% to non-exam assessments.
Examinations – You will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of digital systems and data, including relevant concepts, principles and requirements.
Non-exam assessments – You will apply your knowledge to tasks and scenarios, produce appropriate outputs, use information effectively, analyse evidence and make judgements or recommendations.
Assessment will focus on your ability to understand key concepts, apply your learning in context and evaluate information to reach reasoned conclusions. The exact assessment tasks, examination arrangements and grading details will follow the awarding organisation’s approved specification.
You must attend an interview where your experience and/or performance and attitude will be considered.
You will need four GCSEs at rade 4, including Maths and/or English.
GCSE IT/Computer Science is not required, as not all schools offer substantial IT or Computer Science programmes at KS4. A student’s personal interest and experience are more important than holding prior IT or Computer Science qualifications.
