Achieving three A*s at A Level would be an extraordinary accomplishment for any student. For Amelia, from St Agnes, Results Day brought an even more remarkable achievement: not only did she achieve A grades in Classical Civilisation, Medieval History and French, she was also the highest-performing student in the country in OCR A Level Classical Civilisation.
Her exceptional results have secured her place to study Ancient and Modern History at the University of Oxford, marking the culmination of two outstanding years at Truro and Penwith College.
Being named the top-performing student nationally in Classical Civilisation places Amelia among the very best young classicists in the UK. In a subject studied by thousands of students across the country, achieving the highest mark is a rare distinction and a testament to her academic ability, dedication and passion for the ancient world.
Despite her success, Amelia admitted she had not expected such an incredible outcome.
“I expected to have to go through clearing! I’m buzzing.”
Amelia’s journey to Oxford began when she chose Truro and Penwith College for the opportunity to focus on the subjects she was most passionate about.
“I chose to come to College for the range of subjects; Truro College allowed me to specialise more in what I wanted to do and what I was interested in. Nowhere else offered these subjects.”
Her love of history, languages and the classical world flourished during her time at College, supported by lecturers who encouraged her to aim high and make the most of every opportunity available.
In particular, Amelia credits her Classical Civilisation lecturer, Stuart, with helping her realise her potential.
“My Classical Civilisation lecturer, Stuart, has made the world of difference. He pushed me to apply for these things and also encouraged me to go to a Summer School in Oxford which inspired me to apply.”
That encouragement proved transformational. The opportunity to experience Oxford through a summer school helped Amelia envisage herself studying at one of the world’s most prestigious universities and ultimately gave her the confidence to submit an application.
As she prepares to begin studying at the University of Oxford, Amelia leaves College with an exceptional academic record and a national accolade that reflects years of hard work and commitment.
