My story

Emma, who previously attended Fowey River Academy, has completed the IB Diploma at Truro College. She is now heading to become an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Ward Williams to work in the Engineering industry.

Emma said: “The IB helped to show that I can manage all those subjects at once.”

The IB curriculum created opportunities for Emma, including trips to Iceland as part of her Geography course. Emma found that the IB also offered fun trips like her Induction Day at Tomperrow which involved team building and activities. She also found it valuable because it taught her how to manage workload, helping her prepare for her future and try different things.

Emma feels that the IB lecturers have been supportive as they have understood how much work the students put in towards their grades.

Emma enjoyed the vast variety of subject choices that the IB allowed her to study providing her with an insight into which subjects are her favourite. Allowing her to continue studying subjects she enjoyed at GCSE, the IB provided the opportunity to continue her studies at a higher level and reflect on her future direction. Emma continued: “Sometimes maybe the path you were planning to take, changes when you get to the IB.”

Emma highlighted the support she received from the College’s Student Services team as very beneficial towards her education, mental health and overall well-being.

Emma closes on: “It’s not just about grades it is also about the other skills you learn because you learn a lot of skills with the IB, you learn how to think critically.”

Emma found that the IB created a lot of experiences for her and provided an insight into what her future could be like, as well as learning communication skills through a small community of like-minded students.
