Hadia’s Story 

When Hadia arrived in the UK from Afghanistan, she faced the challenge of rebuilding her life and restarting her education after years of disruption. Having never used a computer before, she has since developed impressive digital skills and created an inspiring magazine as part of her Essential Digital Skills unit on the Young ESOL programme at Truro and Penwith College.

Her magazine shares the experiences of Afghan girls and reflects her own remarkable journey of resilience, determination and ambition.

In the introduction to her publication, Hadia writes:

“I would like to share the story of Afghan girls and the challenges many of us have faced in recent years. Afghan girls have dreams, talents, and ambitions, but many have been denied the opportunity to pursue their education and build their futures.

Four years ago, when the Taliban returned to power, schools were closed to girls, and I was unable to continue my education. The situation in my country became very difficult, and my family was forced to leave Afghanistan. We moved to Pakistan, but unfortunately, I was still unable to continue my studies there. Life was not easy for Afghan refugees, and many families faced uncertainty and hardship.

Although I was away from school for four years, I never gave up on my dreams. Eventually, I came to London, where I was finally able to restart my education. Through hard work and determination, I passed my exams and earned two certificates.

Returning to school after such a long break was challenging, but I remained committed to achieving my goals.

My dream is to become a dentist. I am working very hard to make this dream a reality, and I hope that one day I will be able to serve my community and contribute positively to this country through my profession.

I also hope that one day all Afghan girls will have the opportunity to return to school, continue their education, and pursue their dreams without barriers. Education is a fundamental right, and every girl deserves the chance to learn, grow, and build a better future.”

The project demonstrates just how far Hadia has come in a short space of time. From learning the basics of using a computer to independently producing a professional digital publication, she has embraced every opportunity available to her.

Roxanne, who teaches Hadia on the Young ESOL programme, said:

“We are really proud of Hadia, especially as she had no computer skills before arriving in the UK. She has done so well on the course, exceeding her goals, achieving her grades and obtaining volunteering opportunities and even some part-time employment.”

Alongside developing her digital skills, Hadia has successfully returned to education, gained qualifications and continues to work towards her long-term ambition of becoming a dentist.

Hadia’s journey shows that with determination, resilience and the right support, barriers can be overcome and ambitions can become reality. By overcoming adversity and embracing new opportunities, she is achieving her goals and building a brighter future at Truro and Penwith College.
