My story

Kenza always knew she wanted to go to university, but her journey there looked a little different to what she first expected.

After studying A Levels, she realised that she needed to take time to reflect on her future.

After this, she discovered the Access to Humanities and Teaching course at Truro and Penwith College and decided to take a different route towards achieving her goals.

“I knew I always wanted to go to university,” Kenza explained. “When I found the one-year Access course, I found something I was really interested in and decided to go for it.”

Returning to education was a big step, and Kenza admits the course has been demanding at times. Balancing deadlines and managing her workload required commitment and organisation, particularly alongside other responsibilities.

However, she says the support available at the College made all the difference.

“There are so many support systems at the College that help you. Whatever challenges you’re facing, there are people who will support you and help you achieve what you want to do.”

Throughout the year, Kenza has developed the academic knowledge and study skills needed to feel confident about progressing to Higher Education.

The course has given her experience of writing essays, delivering presentations, preparing for exams and developing essential university skills such as academic referencing.

“Study skills are a really important part of the course,” she said. “You learn how to reference properly and what university is going to be like, especially in your first year. It really prepares you.”

As well as growing academically, Kenza has also become more confident in her own abilities, particularly when presenting ideas and communicating with others.

Looking ahead, she hopes to study History and Politics at university, with Royal Holloway among her top choices.

“I’m really excited for the next step,” she said. “This course has made me excited about going to university.”

Reflecting on her time at Truro and Penwith College, Kenza is proud of how far she has come.

“I’ve loved every bit of this course. Even when it’s been challenging, I’ve had so much support to get me to where I am now.”
