Our supportive, work-related programmes are designed for school leavers who want to build their confidence and progress to further study, an Apprenticeship or employment.
What are Level 1 and Level 2 courses?
Level 1 and Level 2 courses provide a practical introduction to your chosen subject while helping you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for your next step.
Most courses take one year to complete and combine classroom learning with practical, hands-on activities. Depending on your starting level and chosen subject, you could progress to a higher-level course, an Apprenticeship or employment.
Level 1 courses help you build essential skills and a strong foundation in your chosen subject. Level 2 courses allow you to develop more advanced knowledge and practical skills, preparing you for Level 3 study or your next step towards a career.
Who are Level 1 and Level 2 courses for?
These courses are ideal for school leavers who want to develop practical skills and gain recognised qualifications in a supportive learning environment. They are particularly suited to students who are working towards the entry requirements for Level 3 study or who want to build their confidence in a technical skill. You do not need to have your entire future planned. Our team will help you identify the course and level that best match your interests, GCSE results and career ambitions.
What subjects can I study at Level 1 or Level 2?
Level 1 and Level 2 courses are available across a wide range of vocational and technical subjects. Options may include:
- Art and Design
- Business
- Computing and IT
- Construction
- Engineering
- Hair and Beauty
- Health and Social Care
- Media
- Motor Vehicle
- Music
- Professional Cookery and Hospitality
- Sport
- Vocational and Work Skills
Some courses provide a broad introduction to a vocational subject, while technical courses focus on the practical skills, industry knowledge and professional standards needed for a particular career.
Technical subjects such as construction, motor vehicle, hair and beauty, and professional cookery combine practical training with classroom-based learning. Depending on the subject, you may progress through Level 1 and Level 2 before moving to Level 3, an Apprenticeship or employment. Course availability and entry requirements vary by subject and campus.
Which course and level are right for me?
The right starting point will depend on your GCSE results, previous experience, chosen subject and future ambitions.
If you are new to a subject or have few formal qualifications, a Level 1 course can help you develop the essential skills and confidence needed to progress.
If you already have some relevant GCSEs or experience, a Level 2 course may be the most appropriate starting point. Successful completion can lead to Level 3 study, an Apprenticeship or employment.
You will have the opportunity to discuss your options during the application and interview process. We will consider your individual circumstances and help you choose a course on which you can succeed.
What grades do I need?
Entry requirements vary according to the course, subject and level.
Some Level 1 programmes have no formal entry requirements. Certain technical courses may ask for GCSEs at Grade 2, including English, maths or science.
Level 2 programmes commonly require three GCSEs at Grade 3, although some subjects may require a Grade 4 in English or maths.

If you do not achieve the GCSE results you expected, please still contact us. We will consider your overall suitability and help you find the most appropriate course and starting level.
Can I study English and Maths alongside my course?
Yes. If you have not yet achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English or maths, your programme will normally include an appropriate English or maths qualification.
Depending on your starting point, you may study GCSE English or maths, or a Functional Skills qualification. Developing these essential skills will support your main course and help you prepare for further study, an Apprenticeship and employment.
What will I do on a Level 1 or Level 2 course?
You will develop knowledge and practical skills connected to your chosen subject. Learning may take place in classrooms, workshops, studios, kitchens, salons or other specialist facilities.
Depending on your course, your programme may include:
- practical projects and activities
- subject-specific theory
- English and maths
- employability and work skills
- individual and group projects
- experience of professional equipment and working environments
- opportunities to learn about careers and progression routes
You will be supported by experienced lecturers who will help you develop your skills, confidence and independence throughout your course.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment arrangements vary by course. They may include practical assessments, coursework, portfolios, projects, examinations and observations of your skills.

Where can a Level 1 or Level 2 course take me?
Level 1 and Level 2 courses are designed to help you progress.
After successfully completing a Level 1 course, you may be able to move on to an appropriate Level 2 programme.
Completing a Level 2 course could allow you to progress to:
- a Level 3 course, including an Extended Diploma or another advanced qualification
- an Apprenticeship in your chosen industry
- further specialist training
- employment

My favourite thing about my course is that you work with lots of people and communicate with them. It’s been a great experience. If you need any help or anything, the lecturers are always there for you.
