Examined Core Health Science
Study units on human physiology and anatomy, and scientific reporting on health issues, as externally examined units.
Hands-On Laboratory Experience
Develop practical skills through dedicated microbiology practical work, assessed through coursework, and specialist applications to infectious diseases.
Coursework focus
Complete your own assignments by researching biomedical topics such as diseases, treatments and human reproduction.
Why choose this course?
AAQ Medical Science students study the principles and applications of medical science, with a mix of exams and coursework. Units cover specialist topics including human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and various health issues such as pathology, disease, and treatments. Practical and investigation skills build on this fundamental knowledge.
This qualification is equivalent to one A Level and can be taken alongside two A Levels and/or another AAQ. The course emphasises detailed scientific knowledge of human body systems, their structure and function, and how problems can arise that require treatment. At Truro and Penwith College, you’ll benefit from well-equipped laboratories, experienced staff and a supportive learning environment that encourages scientific curiosity and independent research. You will be taught by expert staff specialising in each field (biology, chemistry, physics and applied science respectively).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Units with exams:
Principles of Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology – Students will explore the biological principles that underpin medical science. Learn how the human body works, how it can go wrong, and how it can be treated.
Health Issues and Scientific Reporting – Students will further develop their understanding of medical science through learning about contemporary health issues, alongside developing knowledge about scientific analysis, evaluation and reporting. explore a number of key areas in the field of medical science, with a focus on health issues faced by the human population today to explore their impact on the world we live in.
Units with coursework:
Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases – Students will investigate the effect of antimicrobial agents on the growth of microorganisms, by selecting and applying knowledge of microorganisms and infectious diseases. They will draw on their wider scientific understanding and skills to plan and carry out a range of practical techniques.
Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies – Students will explore biological molecules and pathways, and their relevance to diseases, disorders, treatments and therapies. Gain theoretical knowledge of diseases and disorders, an insight into current and future treatments, and knowledge of how biology is applied to make a positive impact on our lives.
Human Reproduction and Fertility – Students will gain an understanding of human reproduction and its control by hormones, and they will examine causes of infertility and possible treatments. Investigate the hormonal control of human reproduction and the medical and social effects if the system malfunctions in humans.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
