WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
Delivered over four days a week for up to three years, small class sizes mean you can get to know your teachers and other learners, build friendships and feel a part of the wider College community. You will be able to take learning at your own pace, explore your interests and aspirations, try new experiences and develop skills that prepare you for adulthood. Throughout your time with us, you will have opportunities to develop your independence, confidence and skills through learning that is meaningful to you and your future.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will develop practical skills for greater independence, including accessing your community, travel training, preparing meals and managing everyday tasks. You will also explore digital literacy, healthy relationships, personal wellbeing and staying safe, both in the community and online.
You will continue to develop your English and Maths working towards Functional Skills qualifications or a units-based Award focused on developing literacy and numeracy skills for everyday life.
Our varied enrichment programme gives you opportunities to explore your interests, and include swimming, horticulture, performing arts and dance, cookery and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
You will also have opportunities to experience the world of work through a range of individual and group work experiences either within the College or with employers and organisations in the local community.
WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?
Your next step will depend on your individual goals, interests and aspirations. Some Engage learners may progress to our Venture programme, while Venture learners may move on to a Level 1 course or another suitable programme within the College.
Other pathways may include supported learning or training, volunteering and community opportunities, supported or paid employment, or developing greater independence in preparation for supported or independent living.
Whatever your destination, we will help you explore your options, build on your strengths and prepare for a next step that is meaningful to you.
During your first six weeks with us, you will complete a baseline assessment through everyday learning activities and experiences. This helps us understand your starting point, recognise your strengths and identify the areas you would like to develop.
Your baseline is used alongside your EHCP outcomes to agree meaningful, individual targets. We use RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) to recognise progress throughout your programme, including achievements that may not be captured through formal qualifications. Progress is regularly reviewed and recorded using Evidence for Learning, helping you, your family and the staff working with you to see how your skills, confidence and independence are developing over time.
English and maths have their own initial and ongoing assessments so that learning can be matched to your starting point. Where appropriate, you will have opportunities to work towards Functional Skills qualifications. We also offer alternative Awards in English and maths, allowing learners to build and demonstrate their skills over time without the need for a formal exam.
Assessment is part of your everyday learning and is designed to recognise your individual progress and achievements throughout your time with us.
No qualifications required
Throughout your course you will have access to a range of people who can support you during your time at College. We also work very closely with families, Cornwall Council and other professionals involved in your life to support a positive and well-planned transition and ongoing support at College.
