WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This T Level has been developed in collaboration with employers to ensure the knowledge and skills you develop reflect the needs of modern engineering and manufacturing industries. T Levels combine technical study with real industry experience, providing a strong alternative to A Levels for students who know they want to pursue a career in engineering.

With a focus on design, development and innovation, you will learn how engineering products are conceived, designed, tested and manufactured. You will develop an understanding of the complete engineering lifecycle while gaining practical skills and workplace experience through an extended industry placement.

Lessons will take place in specialist engineering facilities and be delivered by experienced staff who will support you in developing the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours expected by employers.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The T Level in Design & Development for Engineering and Manufacturing consists of three key elements:

Core Component: This component develops the knowledge and understanding that underpin modern engineering and manufacturing industries. Topics include: engineering business and commercial principles, health and safety, mathematics and science for engineering, quality and continuous improvement and materials and manufacturing processes

Occupational Specialist Component: You will develop the specialist skills required within engineering design and development roles. Topics include: engineering design processes, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and development, problem solving and engineering innovation and manufacturing.

Industry Placement: Every student will complete a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours. This placement provides valuable experience within a real engineering or manufacturing environment, helping you develop practical skills, professional behaviours and industry knowledge.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

This course is intended for students who wish to progress into highly skilled engineering and manufacturing careers.

Progression routes include:

  • Engineering degrees
  • Product Design degrees
  • Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs)
  • Higher and Degree Apprenticeships
  • Engineering design technician roles
  • Product development roles
  • Manufacturing engineering careers
  • Mechanical and production engineering pathways

Upon successful completion, students will possess the technical knowledge and occupational skills required to progress confidently into employment or higher-level study.

Year One

  • Core knowledge examinations
  • Employer-set project
  • Practical and written assessments

Year Two

  • Occupational specialism assessments
