Truro College Art Summer School

A week of inventive creativity for 12-16 year olds.

Experience creativity through art and design. Come and work in our specialist studios alongside our expert tutors. Get creative using a variety of materials, building your art and design skills by using different processes each day.

Classes run from 10am – 3pm each day and cost £30 per day or £130 for the week.

Puppet Making | Monday 27 July

Create your own unique hand puppet. You will design the head of a character before using carving and shaping methods to sculpt them out of foam. Once you have learnt the techniques to give your puppet form and movement you can give them further detail with paints, marble eyes and fabric. Finally, you will bring your character to life with helpful puppeteering tips.

Pottery/Ceramics | Tuesday 28 July or Thursday 30 July

We will start by exploring different textures and surfaces, please bring something with you to work from. These textures will be transferred to clay slabs. You will be taught the technique of slab building to build your chosen style of pot, be it a mug, a jug, a desk tidy or vase. You will then decorate your pot with coloured glazes. Through this hands on ceramics workshop you’ll find out how far your creativity and ideas can take you.

Zine story telling workshop | Tuesday 28 July

Dive into the bold, colourful world of zine-making! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the rich, rebellious history of zine culture and discover how generations of creators have used self-publishing to share their voices, passions, poetry and stories. Now it’s your turn! Through collage, drawing and experimentation, you’ll create your own unique mini publication. Tear, layer, scribble, glue, paint and piece together to create eye-catching illustrations, bold characters, comics, original stories, or anything you’re passionate about. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your own handmade zine, ready to share with friends and family or trade with fellow zine-makers.

Jewellery | Wednesday 29 July or Friday 31 July

Create a Celtic torc style bangle or pierce out a design from a sheet of copper such as a leaping hare, a rose or even a maple leaf, adding texture and patina, or make a simple band ring with traditional craftsmanship tools. Such techniques will enable you to create something quite unique, whilst gaining experience of a jewellery workshop, leaving the studio with something personally made by you.

Mask Making | Wednesday 29 July

Join one of our artists to create your own large carnival-style mask using sustainable, recycled materials. Explore global mask-making traditions while designing your own unique mask. Taking inspiration from animal heads, folk traditions and other more contemporary masks in popular culture, everyone will be able to take the theme of their mask in any direction they choose. Learn how to build a secure, comfortable frame, then unleash your creativity to craft a one-of-a-kind piece.

Automata Making Workshop | Friday 31 July

Come and create your own moving model. Discover the art of automata and learn how to make your very own automata out of recycled materials, found objects and junk modelling. There are a very wide range of skills involved in automata making including mechanical engineering, sculpture, carving, painting, decoration techniques, using recycled materials.
