Truro and Penwith College has officially welcomed Carl Riding as its new Principal, marking the start of a new chapter for one of the South West’s leading tertiary colleges.

Carl formally took up the role this week, following a handover event with outgoing Principal Martin Tucker, who led the College for many years and leaves a strong legacy of growth and development.

In the lead-up to his first official day, Carl has already spent time out and about across Cornwall, meeting with students, staff, employers and key stakeholders to build a clear understanding of the College and the communities it serves.

This has included a series of early engagement activities such as a roundtable with the local MP, a business breakfast with regional employers, and meetings with representatives from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Cornwall Manufacturing Group, reflecting the College’s close links with industry and its role in supporting skills across the region.

Alongside this, Carl has prioritised time with students across campuses, ensuring he is visible and approachable from the outset.

His first days in post have culminated in a well-attended staff development event, where he delivered his first Principal’s address to colleagues. During the session, Carl spoke about his personal connection to Cornwall, the reasons behind taking up the role and his confidence in the College’s strengths and opportunities for the future.

Carl Riding, Principal of Truro and Penwith College, said: “It’s been a fantastic first couple of weeks, and I’ve had such a warm welcome from students, staff and partners across Cornwall. Spending time out on campus and in the community has really reinforced for me the strength of the College and the important role it plays across the region.

“What’s stood out most is the commitment of our staff and the potential of our students. I’m really looking forward to building on that after Easter, working together to ensure Truro and Penwith College continues to be the first choice for a high-quality educational experience in Cornwall.”

Carl joins the College with a strong focus on student success, partnership working and ensuring that learners across Cornwall are supported to progress into higher education, employment and skilled careers.
