Having started kickboxing six years ago to build confidence and step outside her comfort zone, Yanna has transformed a once-shy personality into that of a successful competitor on the national and international stage.
“I started kickboxing because I was very shy and had low confidence in myself and wanted to try something new,” she said. “It has changed who I am massively and has become a big part of my life. It feels like a second home to me.”
After beginning competitive kickboxing two years ago, Yanna quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with, claiming two English titles, a British title and a World Championship title.
Competing in Germany, she took on some of the sport’s best athletes, securing a bronze medal in the 15-17 age category and a silver medal in the adult 18-45 category.
While delighted to stand on the podium, the former Bodmin College student admitted the results have motivated her to push even harder. “Last year I won gold and the World title, so I felt a bit crushed at first. But it’s given me even more motivation to train harder and improve for the future.”
The competition was not without its challenges. As well as facing strong opponents, she battled through an ankle injury and remained determined throughout the event. “The biggest challenge was fighting through my ankle injury after re-injuring it during one of my adult bouts. My coach stood up for me every step of the way and helped me keep believing in myself. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have been as successful.”
Looking ahead, Yanna is already preparing for another World Championship event in Wales this November before taking the next step in her martial arts journey by grading for her black belt in December.
She also hopes her success will inspire more young women to consider martial arts. “For all the girls thinking of trying martial arts, just go for it. It can feel scary at first, but the people you meet and the skills you gain are amazing. Everyone looks after each other and no one is left out.”
With another major competition on the horizon and a black belt grading to aim for, she is determined to continue developing in the sport she loves while encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.
