For Adam, art has always been more than a subject. It has been a passion that has grown with him over the years.
“I’ve always loved art since I was younger,” he explained. “When I was about 13, I got an A3 sketch pad and started doing pencil drawings of portraits and characters that I enjoyed. It’s always been something that’s been a skill of mine.”
When it came to deciding what to do after school, Adam wasn’t completely sure of his next step. However, after discovering Truro and Penwith College and visiting an Open Day, he knew he had found the right place.
“After looking for a while, I came across Truro College and the course and thought it was a lovely fit. I came to an Open Day and met some of the lecturers. It was really lovely.”
Since joining the Extended Diploma in Art, Design & Communication, Adam has immersed himself in a creative environment where students are encouraged to experiment, develop their skills and explore different artistic disciplines.
“I really love it,” he said. “It’s a really inviting place. There are like-minded people around you, and there are facilities everywhere. Printmaking, Fine Art, jewellery, there are so many opportunities.”
One of the things Adam values most about the course is the freedom to discover different creative pathways and find the areas that inspire him most.
“It can definitely be daunting looking at a course and not really knowing what’s going to go on,” he explained. “But there are so many different pathways you can go down. There’s 3D, Fine Art, printmaking and so many different routes to explore. No matter what your interests are, there’s always something here for you to love.”
That sense of exploration has helped Adam continue developing his artistic practice while building confidence in his abilities.
“It’s all practice and repetition. As long as you have a passion for it and a love for it, you’re going to enjoy it.”
One of the highlights of Adam’s time at College was an educational trip to Milan, where students had the opportunity to experience one of Europe’s most influential creative cities first-hand.
“We went to Milan. It was absolutely incredible.”
Among the many memorable experiences was a visit to the famous Duomo di Milano.
“We got to see the sculptures and architecture. There are around 3,700 sculptures across the outside and hundreds of spires. It was just absolutely incredible.”
The trip provided fresh inspiration and allowed students to experience art, design and culture beyond the classroom.
Adam credits both the lecturers and his fellow students for making the experience so memorable.
“The lecturers were absolutely lovely and made it a wonderful time. The people there as well were really great. It was probably the best week of my life.”
Looking ahead, Adam is keeping an open mind about where his creativity might take him, while continuing to build his experience and artistic voice.
“I’m mainly taking it step by step, but I’d love to build relationships with galleries and possibly go travelling to different countries to see their arts and cultures. I think that would be lovely for developing my own art and style.”
Adam’s story shows how studying Art, Design & Communication is about more than developing creative skills. It is about finding your place within a creative community, discovering new possibilities and gaining the confidence to turn your passion into a future. Through inspiring experiences, supportive lecturers and opportunities both in and beyond the classroom, Adam is developing the skills and confidence to take the next step on his artistic journey.
