Originally from Penzance, Jake joined Penwith College from Humphry Davy School in 2022 to study the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT. With a keen interest in technology and computing, he spent two years developing his technical knowledge while making the most of the opportunities available beyond the classroom.
Alongside his studies, Jake became involved in the College’s eSports and Board Games Academies, where he met like-minded students and formed friendships that have continued well beyond College.
After completing his course, Jake progressed to Bournemouth University to study Cyber Security Management. While enjoying the university experience, he discovered a growing interest in a different field and decided to transfer to Criminology, a subject he is now pursuing with enthusiasm.
Reflecting on his time at Penwith College, Jake said: “The support from my lecturers was fantastic. They genuinely cared about helping us succeed and were always there when I needed guidance. The confidence they gave me helped make the transition to university much easier.”
Jake also highlighted the impact of enrichment opportunities on his student experience. “The eSports and Board Games Academies were brilliant. They gave me the chance to meet people with similar interests, make lifelong friends and enjoy a really strong sense of community alongside my studies.”
Now settled into university life, Jake is enjoying the independence and opportunities that come with higher education. “I’ve really enjoyed university life so far. Living independently, meeting new people and experiencing something completely different has been great.”
Jake recently returned to Penwith College to catch up with his former tutor, Joe, and share his experiences with current students. His journey demonstrates how College can provide the foundations for future success while giving students the confidence to explore new opportunities and follow their interests.
