Starting somewhere new can feel overwhelming, especially when you are leaving secondary school behind and taking your next step into further education.
For the Student Ambassadors at Truro and Penwith College, that feeling is something they understand well. Many remember arriving at an Open Day unsure of what to expect, but they quickly discovered a welcoming community where making friends, trying new things and finding support came naturally.
“You’re going to make friends no matter what course you’re doing or what you’re studying,” explained Dian. “It’s bound to happen.”
That sense of belonging is one of the reasons many students choose to become ambassadors themselves. Having experienced the transition first-hand, they want to help others feel confident as they begin their own College journey.
“When I came to Open Evenings, I was really nervous,” Mia recalled. “I didn’t know anything about the College or where anything was. I found the ambassadors were great people to go to for help, guidance or even just directions.”
Today, those same students are providing reassurance and support to prospective students, helping them navigate campus life and make informed decisions about their future.
Beyond the friendships they have built, the ambassadors say one of the biggest benefits of College life is the freedom to explore new interests and opportunities.
“Just the opportunity to try new things is really good,” said Jace. “Even with your courses, you’re not necessarily doing something you did at secondary school. You’re trying something new that interests you.”
Students also enjoy the independence that comes with College life, whether that means spending time in the library, taking part in extracurricular activities or simply making choices about how they spend their day.
“There’s a lot more freedom of choice,” Oak explained. “You can choose what you do in your own time, get involved in activities and spend time with your friends.”
For the ambassadors, getting involved has been one of the most rewarding parts of their experience. Their advice to future students is simple: say yes to opportunities.
“Take as many opportunities as you can,” Amelia said. “There’s so much here and if you don’t take them, you’ll always wonder, ‘What if I did that?’”
Their stories show how quickly College can become more than just a place to study. It becomes a community where students build confidence, discover new interests and create friendships that last long beyond their time on campus.
From nervous visitors at an Open Day to confident ambassadors helping others find their feet, these students are proof that taking that first step can lead to incredible opportunities.
