Witney and Elissa met on the first day of their hospitality course at Truro and Penwith College, and they quickly bonded over a shared love of baking. They describe themselves as very similar, and the friends you make on the course, they say, are amazing and often become lifelong friends.

Both have a real passion for food. One of them has loved cooking since she was little, helping out in the kitchen with her dad. Now she’s getting a qualification she knows will help her so much in life, with the freedom to work anywhere from a kitchen to a cafe.

Cooking for the college restaurant has been a highlight. They talk about the Christmas service, when the whole restaurant was full, and they could stand at the pass and watch everyone enjoy the food they’d made. It was, they say, really, really nice.

They’ve also worked at events together, including the Royal Cornwall Show, where they were there for both days and saw a completely different set of chefs on each. They also helped at the Padstow Christmas Fair. Watching the chef demos has given them a chance to learn how different chefs cook, work, and demonstrate, because every chef does it differently.

Like the rest of the group, they value that the course covers both front of house and kitchen, so you can build skills for either, and help each other when you know people’s strengths. Their tip for new students: talk to people in the kitchen and get to know everybody.
