Apprenticeship Award Winner Brian

“Brian doesn’t just train apprentices – he shapes confident, capable people who are ready for a career.”

Name: Brian

Course: Engineering and fabrication apprenticeships, including plumbing, welding, and pipe fabrication, with additional support for English and Maths qualifications.

Next steps: Continued development of future apprentice cohorts, supporting progression through End Point Assessments, and sustaining A&P Falmouth’s strong apprenticeship culture.

My Story

Brian’s calm demeanour, patience, and genuine interest in every apprentice inspire them to do their best, both for him and for themselves.

Apprentices frequently comment that “Brian always makes time for you” and that they “feel confident asking questions without fear of getting it wrong.” Alongside practical training, Brian supports apprentices who need additional help with English and Maths, allowing extra time to complete college work while on site at A&P.

This year alone, three apprentices under Brian’s mentorship – Anna, Eden, and Jack – achieved distinctions in their End Point Assessments, reflecting the high standards and encouragement he consistently provides.

Brian’s mentoring extends far beyond technical instruction. He plays a vital role in building apprentices’ independence, confidence, and overall wellbeing. By adapting his teaching style to suit each individual, Brian helps apprentices take ownership of their development and believe in their abilities.

His approachable nature creates a safe and supportive learning environment where mistakes are viewed as part of growth. As one apprentice described, “Brian never puts you down – he helps you learn from it and move forward.”

Brian also takes a genuine interest in apprentices’ lives outside of work, regularly checking in and offering support when challenges arise. Most notably, when one apprentice faced homelessness, Brian went above and beyond by offering them a place to stay, ensuring they could continue their apprenticeship safely and with stability.

He also supports apprentices to build strong working relationships by organising extra-curricular activities such as cricket, sailing, and dragon boat racing, helping them feel part of a team and the wider A&P family.

Nominated by numerous colleagues and apprentices across A&P Falmouth, Brian is widely recognised for the exceptional impact of his mentorship on individuals and workplace culture. He leads by example, promoting professionalism, safety, and respect, while encouraging apprentices to take on real responsibility across Health & Safety, workplace security, and professional conduct.

His leadership, compassion, and commitment have not only resulted in excellent academic outcomes, but in confident, capable apprentices who integrate seamlessly into the organisation. Brian truly “sets the gold standard for mentoring” and is regarded as a role model by apprentices and colleagues alike.
