Name: Katie

Course: L3 Multi-Channel Marketer Apprenticeship

Former School: Penryn College

Former Creative Media Production & Technology student Katie has launched her marketing career at Spaceport Cornwall after turning a work placement opportunity into a Multi-Channel Marketer Apprenticeship. After gaining experience during a placement linked to a space launch project, Katie successfully applied for an apprenticeship with the organisation and is now helping promote one of Cornwall’s most exciting industries.

Katie’s interest in marketing stemmed from a fascination with how organisations communicate with audiences across a range of platforms. “I was inspired to go into a marketing apprenticeship because I find it really fascinating how people push products out into the world and how things are advertised. Whether that’s video, photography, graphics or social media, I love how all of those platforms work together.”

After deciding A Levels weren’t the right route for her, Katie enrolled on the Creative Media Production & Technology course at Truro and Penwith College, where she developed a broad range of creative and technical skills. “I really enjoyed the course. We did lots of video work, music videos and documentary projects, and it opened up channels into my career.”

The course also encouraged students to consider their progression options and explore different routes into employment and higher education. “We did lots of research into apprenticeships and universities, and that really helped me work out what path I wanted to go down.”

A project connected to a space launch proved to be a pivotal moment in Katie’s journey. After taking part, she secured a week-long work placement with the organisation behind the project, producing a documentary about her experience with the launch crew. “I spent a week making a documentary about my time with the launch crew.”

That opportunity soon led to the next step in her career. “After I’d come back from that, they advertised an apprenticeship. I applied and now I’m working with them, which is a surreal experience.”

Katie now plays a key role in Spaceport Cornwall’s marketing activity, creating content, managing social media channels and supporting digital campaigns. “I really enjoy what I’m doing. I’m managing social media, writing captions and creating video content. It’s fascinating to be in the space industry, even though I’m not a scientist or engineer. The opportunities I get are incredible.”

Alongside developing her marketing expertise, Katie says her confidence and communication skills have grown significantly through the apprenticeship. “I’ve definitely become more confident in asking questions and not being afraid to ask for help. That’s been a really important life skill.”

One aspect of the apprenticeship Katie particularly values is the way her learning is directly linked to her day-to-day role. “Everything is based around what you’re actually doing at work. You’re writing about real experiences, so it’s easier because you know exactly what’s going on.”

Reflecting on her journey from Creative Media student to marketing apprentice, Katie encourages others to be confident in pursuing opportunities that interest them.”Go for it. Go for a marketing apprenticeship, go for something that you want to do, don’t be afraid to do it and just take the leap. You never know what’s going to happen if you don’t do that, and you might miss out on something great.”
