For Seb, Luke and Dan, choosing an Apprenticeship offered the opportunity to learn in a way that suited them best: through real-world experience, practical problem-solving and hands-on training.

Working alongside experienced professionals while studying has allowed them to develop industry-standard skills and gain valuable insight into the engineering sector.

Seb explained: “I work as a maintenance technician, dealing with electronic and hydraulic systems.”

By applying what they learn in College directly to the workplace, apprentices can see how their skills translate into real engineering environments from day one.

The facilities at Truro and Penwith College have played an important role in supporting that learning. Students have access to specialist workshops, industry-standard equipment and professional software that mirrors what they will use throughout their careers.

“The facilities here are amazing,” said Seb. “We’ve got a huge workshop with all the equipment that you’d need to learn on.”

Alongside practical equipment, apprentices also gain experience using specialist software and digital tools.

“We’ve got SolidWorks for CAD design and software for electrical design. They’re really helpful tools to learn and then apply in the workplace.”

A key benefit of the Apprenticeship has been the personalised support available throughout the programme. Apprentices highlighted the value of working closely with lecturers and trainers who are committed to helping them succeed.

“We get a lot of one-to-one attention and help wherever it’s needed.”

The support of the teaching team has helped apprentices build confidence and develop their skills throughout their studies.

“The staff were brilliant. Bev, Mark, James and Steph were really helpful throughout the Apprenticeship.”

For students who enjoy practical learning, apprentices believe there is no substitute for gaining experience in a real working environment.

“I’d definitely recommend an Apprenticeship if it’s something you want to be doing hands-on,” explained one student. “Sometimes the only way to learn that kind of thing is to actually be physically doing it.”

The combination of workplace experience and College learning has helped apprentices gain a broad understanding of engineering, while also allowing them to explore areas of particular interest.

“I get a good variation of everything, focusing on both the electrical and mechanical sides.”

As they look towards the future, all three apprentices are focused on continuing to grow within the industry and building successful engineering careers.

“My long-term goals are to hopefully carry on progressing through the engineering industry.”

Their advice for anyone considering an Apprenticeship is simple: take the opportunity, believe in yourself and make the most of the support available.

“Definitely go for it. Be confident. Seek help from others where you can.”

Their experiences show how Apprenticeships can provide much more than technical training. They offer the chance to become part of a supportive learning community, gain valuable industry experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in a rewarding career.
