My Story

Dawn Swanston is a remarkable example of how professional healthcare training, paired with innate empathy, can profoundly impact some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Working for the Cornwall Foundation Trust at the Sowenna unit, a specialised facility for children and young people facing complex mental health challenges, Dawn has established herself as an essential figure in both the clinical team and the lives of her patients. Since beginning her Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker course in January 2025, she has consistently demonstrated a “gold standard” of care that goes far beyond the basic requirements of her role.

Dawn is widely known for her exceptional compassion, often described as having a nurturing, “mothering” presence that provides a vital sense of safety and stability for the young people on the unit. This emotional intelligence is why patients frequently seek her out when she is on shift; her ability to build deep trust in a high-pressure mental health environment is a testament to her unique character and professionalism. She doesn’t just perform her duties; she takes immense pride in ensuring every patient feels seen, heard, and valued.

Dawn’s academic contributions are equally impressive. During a recent study skills unit, she chose to research the complexities of eating disorders, a topic of immense relevance to her workplace. Her approach was rigorous and proactive; she collaborated with experienced colleagues at Sowenna, sharing her proposed research questionnaires to gather expert feedback. This professional engagement ensured her findings were grounded in real-world clinical experience. The resulting submission was so comprehensive that it passed through the marking process immediately without any resubmissions, providing fresh insights that even opened the eyes of seasoned educators.

In the classroom at Truro and Penwith College, Dawn is a collaborative and attentive force. She treats every module as an opportunity to improve the service she provides, always eager to absorb new ideas and bring them back to her team. Whether she is leading a research project or going the extra mile during a difficult shift, Dawn’s dedication to her patients and her profession is unwavering. She is not just an apprentice; she is a vital asset to Cornwall’s healthcare community and a truly deserving award winner.
