Starting College is a big step, and for Lilly and Evie, it came with plenty of nerves. Like many students, they worried about meeting new people, settling into a new environment and succeeding on their course.
However, it did not take long for those concerns to fade.
Although they only met a few weeks into term, their friendship quickly grew. The pair describe each other as best friends and say their connection has become one of the most important parts of their College experience.
Evie explained: “Me and Lilly have only known each other since October, but we are literally best friends. I’ve never met someone like Lilly. She’s so like me, so it’s really, really great.”
For Lilly, finding such a strong friendship was unexpected.
“I never knew I had someone missing and I found her. It’s something I didn’t know I needed, but it’s actually really helped me a lot.”
Their experience reflects what they believe makes Truro and Penwith College special. While academic success is important, the friendships, support and sense of community have made the biggest difference.
“When I came in, I was very scared about the course and how well I’d do in terms of grades, but also the people,” said Lilly. “You realise that grades don’t define you as a person. What really is important is the friendships you build and the connections you make while you’re here.”
Alongside building friendships, both students have developed a passion for their Health and Social Care studies. They enjoy learning about human development, life stages and the theories that help us understand how people grow, learn and experience the world around them.
The supportive atmosphere across the College has also helped them settle in and thrive.
“The staff are just so amazing and accommodating,” said Evie. “Everyone is so supportive and kind.”
For Lilly, the welcoming environment stands out every day.
“There’s so much diversity around campus. You can see people expressing themselves and being who they are. No one’s being judged. It’s very open, freeing and lovely.” Together, Lilly and Evie’s story shows that College is about more than qualifications. It is about finding your people, growing in confidence and becoming part of a community where you feel supported to succeed.
